wondered whether Macclesfield might lend us a couple of officers,â she said. âIt would give us a bit of a start. And after all, this might help clear up their unsolved murder too.â
It was much later and they were sitting in Colcloughâs office eating greasy chip-shop chips and drinking lager out of cans.
âItâs funny,â said Joanna. âSharon had close friends but kept a lot of secrets from them.â She paused. âI suppose somewhere near the top of the list of suspects has to be Finnigan, her ex-husband and father of the two older children. And he does have a history of violence.â
âNot sex attacks, though,â Mike pointed out. âNot rape.â
âABH,â she said. âHe knocked her about and broke her jaw.â
Arthur Colclough raised his eyebrows. âIâm surprised he didnât get GBH for that one.â
âThe old provocation card was flashed,â Joanna said. âHe did come home from night duty to find her in bed with another man.â
Colclough nodded. âDid they get a divorce?â
âYes, two years ago.â
âThen she took up with Paul Agnew,â Mike put in. âHe works at the oatcake shop at the top end of town.â
Joanna was in the act of sliding a chip into her mouth. âMike,â she said. âWe havenât asked anyone whether she had a job.â
âShe had three kids,â Mike said. âShe wouldnât have had the time.â
âPart time?â Joanna said. âItâs worth a try.â
Mike nodded.
âIâll ask Christine tomorrow.â
Colclough was enjoying the chips too much to feel even a twinge of guilt. This felt like old times before he was too senior to enjoy a newspaper full of chips at the station. âNectar,â he said, puzzling the others. âWhat was that you said about the father of the third child?â
âYet another of the many mysteries of Sharon Priestâs overcrowded sex life,â said Joanna. âBut heâs almost certainly the married lover.â
âAnd we know nothing about him ...â
Mike shrugged. âNo,â he said.
Colclough dabbled a chip on the sprinkling of salt. âBut somebody knows,â he said. âAnd if he was married and she threatened to pull the plug on him it would give him an excellent motive for wanting her silenced.â
Joanna nodded. âWeâd thought of that,â she said, then glanced at the computer. âBut doesnât this look a little larger than a simple domestic affair?â
The Super frowned at her. âDo we know nothing about this married man?â
âBugger all,â Mike said gloomily, âapart from the fact that he drives a smart car.â
Colclough popped the last of his chips into his mouth and stared at the greasy paper regretfully.
âWell, that really narrows the field,â he said. âAnd the ad in the paper?â He was looking at Mike.
âNot much help,â Mike said gloomily. âIt seems they just hand over all the mail addressed to a particular box number. Anyone could have picked it up. Itâs really lax,â he grumbled. âIt could be anyone ... The editor said half of the men who reply to the lonely hearts are married anyway.â
âSo it doesnât even rule out married men.â
âQuite honestly, sir,â Mike said reluctantly, âI donât think weâll ever know who all of them are.â
âWell, we donât need to know all of them, Sergeant, Colclough said sharply. âJust the one.â
Mike flushed.
The Super glanced at Joanna. âYouâve got your work cut out, Piercy.â
She nodded. âI know, sir.â
He grinned. âYouâll get there, in the end. But itâll take an awful lot of leg work.â
She looked at him. âIâve got to get him,â she said, âotherwise heâll kill
