but Brenda had come to an abrupt standstill. Noticing Cole was no longer f ollowing her into the restaurant; Brenda stopped and quickly surveyed the couple who was obviously familiar with Cole.
" H i, Cole. How's it going?" Brandon spoke first. Kit was unable to utter a sound. Her eyes flitted from Cole to the beautiful woman at his side who was possessively clinging to his arm. Just hours befor e, she had shared a bed with this man. Already he was moving onto his next conquest. Kit wanted to run and hide.
"Brandon, Kit." Cole took an uneasy breath, wary of the uncertain expression flitting over Kit's face. Brenda cleared her throat , a terse reminder that she would not be ignored. Quickl y, Cole made the brief introductions.
"Oh, you're the one who is watching sweet little Megan?" Brenda ’s tone made Kit feel as if s he were being introduced as Mary Poppins.
" Ye s, I am , " Kit's tone was cool and reserved. Schooling her features, she refused to reveal her inner turmoil. Instead , she portrayed cool indifference .
"I'm so glad we ran into you. In fact, just the other da y, Cole and I were talking about you."
Cole noticeabl y tensed; he was prepared to drag Brenda away. Kit greeted the comment by looking inquiringly at Cole, her brow c r o o ked mockingly .
"Cole and I have been planning a Halloween party for some time. Since Cole is the host, he really must find a sitter for Megan. Of course, he doesn't want her to miss the holiday, so we were wondering if Megan could go trick or treating with your daughter on Halloween . Perhaps she could spend the night."
"Brenda , " Cole attempted to interrupt , yet Brenda ignored him and continued to talk.
"Of cours e, we'll pay you extra."
"Certainly. Megan's welcome to spend Halloween with us. But you don’t need to worry about paying me extra. In fact, Mr. Taylor ’s pay is so generous, I frequently throw in extras. " Flashing another mocking smile at Cole, Kit noticed his jaw clenching in anger . H e was fairly scowling .
"We really must be going. Nice to meet yo u.” W ithout waiting for a response, Kit dragged her brother to the car.
"What the hell was that all about?" Brandon asked once they were in the vehicle , moving down the highway. Shifting the gears, he glanced over at his sister who was staring out the side window.
"Nothing , " she answered tersely.
"Kit, didn't you go out with Cole last night?" During breakfast, when he asked his sister about her evening out, she made it clear that she didn’t want to talk about it. Not wanting to pry, he allowed Kit her privacy, yet now he was too curious to keep silent.
    "Not exactly , " s he mumbled.
"What do you mean, not exactly ? "
"It wasn't a date." Her gazed remained fixed on some unseen object out the car window.
"Exactly what was it?" Brandon 's voice was low and flat. Turning abruptly to face her brother, Kit’s blue eyes blazed angrily .
"We go t together for a good fuck,” she spat.
“ Jesu s, Kit! You accused me of being crude!" Brandon swerved to the side of the road and slammed on the brakes. “ Just what the hell do you mean?"
"Exactly what I said. The sexual tension between Cole and I has been unbearable. "
"No kidding , " Brandon muttered under his breath, recalling the sparks of jealous y he had witnessed during his first meeting with Cole Taylor.
"We simply decided to yield to the curiosity and put an end to the tension."
"Put an end to the tension? Is that what you call it ? " Brandon laughed cruelly . "There was enough tension back the re to light up the city for a month. I guess you didn't do a very good job." Kit didn't respond. They were both silent for a moment.
"Are you seriously telling me that you and Cole ... you didn't even go out to dinner or anything?"
"We didn't get together for dinner or anything but sex , " Kit s aid angrily .
"That does n't sound like you, Kit! My God! " Suddenly the reality of Kit's words sunk in.
    "I'm a grown woman , Brandon."
    "I know that. I
