asked.
Goose slurped the last of his milk. âCome on, Jesse. We talked about it. Iâm having a Halloween party at my house Saturday night. Everybodyâs gonna be there. Buckyâs even bringing Shrek along.â
âMan, stop calling Melissa Dugan Shrek,â Bucky griped.
âSorry, Goose,â Jesse said. âI canât make it.â
âWhy not?â
âTJâs already invited me to a party at his apartment clubhouse Saturday night.â
Goose rolled his eyes. âSo youâre telling me youâd rather go to The Jobberâs party than mine?â
Jesse stood and grabbed his lunch tray. âYeah, thatâs exactly what Iâm telling you. Later, guys.â
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
A fter Spanish class, Jesse rushed out of the building. TJ was waiting for him in front of the school.
âBefore we go to the gym, we need to make a stop at the store,â TJ said. âHave you got any money on you?â
Jesse checked his w allet. âThirty-two bucks. Why?â
ââCause Iâm gonna help you buy everything youâll need to build your muscles.â
TJ drove to the Rivercenter Mall. The place was busier than Jesse had expected for a Wednesday afternoon. He figured that most of the shoppers were tourists who were going inside the mall after having visited the Alamo or taken a stroll down the Riverwalk. Jesse and TJ walked past department stores, kiosks and souvenir shops. When they neared the food court, an old woman sitting at a table with her husband flagged them down.
âExcuse me, young man,â she said to TJ. âDonât you wrestle on Monday Night Mayhem ?â
TJ smiled. âYes, maâam, I do. Iâm TJ Masters.â
The old woman elbowed her husband. âSee, Hutch? I told you it was him.â
The man bobbed his head with his mouth open, but he didnât say anything.
âIâve seen you on TV,â the woman said. âItâs too bad you donât win very much,â she added with concern.
TJ winked at Jesse. âI know, maâam. They put me up against some real mean wrestlers. But Iâll do my best to win next week.â TJ was speaking in kayfabe, pretending that pro wrestling is real. âThis is Jesse Baron,â TJ told the couple. âHis father is Mark Baron, the Angel of Death.â
âOh, dear,â the woman said. âI hope youâre not anything like your father. I donât know why he wears that ugly make-up and those awful clothes. Iâm sorry, young man, but the Angel of Death just gives me the willies.â
âHe sure is scary, isnât he, maâam?â TJ said. âBut donât you worry. Jesseâs not anything like his father.â He winked at Jesse again.
The woman handed TJ a napkin. âCould I please have your autograph, Mr. Masters?â
âYou bet. Have you got a pen?â
The woman pulled a pen from her husbandâs shirt pocket. The man didnât react. He just kept bobbing his head.
TJ leaned on the table and autographed the napkin.
âYou sign it, too,â the woman told Jesse. âI know youâre not a wrestler, but your father is.â
Jesse looked at TJ.
âGo ahead,â he said.
Jesse autographed the womanâs napkin.
After they left the couple, TJ told Jesse, âI really am gonna win next week on Monday Night Mayhem . You know that little scene with Tanner at the UFC matches? Well, Collins thinks they can do something with it, so the ACWâs giving me a bit of a push.â
âYeah, my father told me about it,â Jesse said.
âAnyway, Iâm scheduled to pin Chris Choate on TV.â
âChoate?â Jesse said. âI thought Chris Choate was being given a push.â
âHe was,â TJ said. âBut I think the ACW officials have lost faith in him. I overheard Harold Becker, the head writer, and Wes Meir, the showâs producer, complaining to
