was stunned by Popsâs lengthy sentences as much as his thoughtfulness. As heâd said, a last-minute ticket wouldnât be cheap. If Woody could helpâ¦âIs it illegal?â
Beckettâs mouth curved. âWe call it creative. â He turned to Woody. âRound trip. Philadelphia to Indianapolis.â
âReturn date?â Woody asked.
Beckett looked at me and my insides churned. âI donât know. Iâ¦you seeâ¦â What the heck. I blurted a condensed version of my brotherâs story, bracing myself for snorts and scoffing when I summed up with, âIâm worried someoneâs swindling my mom.â
âSweetheart scam?â Tabasco said.
Gina shrugged. âMaybe sheâs just letting her hair down.â
âLetâs find out.â Beckett looked at Woody. âBook two one-way flights, plus a rental car.â
âIâll ready your suitcase,â Pops said, and limped from the room.
Gina stood. âHold up, Jazzman. What about the senator?â
Beckett rocked back on his heels, considered. âHe lives just outside of Hammond. How far is that from your hometown, Twinkie?â
I blinked. âHammond, Indiana? Weâre talking about a senator from my home state?â
âYes and yes. How far?â
âTwo, maybe two and a half hours.â
He looked at his team. âIâll drive up and interview the senatorâs wife in person.â
âSo weâre taking the case,â Gina said. âBecause if we donât, seems to me weâre facing something more permanent than suspension.â
Beckett didnât comment. Either he didnât care or he wasnât concerned.
His silence triggered hard stares and confrontational body language. I wasnât sure what Iâd stepped into, but I hoped it worked itself out before I returned.
âYou canât come with me, Beckett,â I said. âHow would I explain you to my family? Chameleonâs covert and youâre a Fed. What if Iâm wrong? What if thereâs no swindle? What if my mom is having an affair?â I clamped my hand over my mouth as soon as the words flew out. Crazy talk.
âDidnât you say something about a high-school reunion?â Beckett asked.
âA civic theater benefit with high-school alumni. Yes, butââ
âWill the others bring their husbands?â
âYes, butââ
âDo you have a boyfriend?â Pops asked.
I thought about Arch, looked at Beckett. I forced my fingers not to scratch. âNo.â
He smiled. âYou do now.â
CHAPTER ELEVEN
M ILO STARED DOWN the rental-car representativeâa pale, thin-lipped kid with slicked-over hair. Pee-wee Hermanâs younger brother. âWhat do you mean there are no available cars? I have a reservation.â
âYou had a reservation, sir. You canceled it.â
âI didnât.â
âYou did.â Pee-wee passed him a computer-generated form. âSays so right here.â
âNo one has luck this bad,â Evie grumbled from behind. âNot even me.â
Nonstop flights had been sold out, doubling travel time to four and a half hours. To aggravate matters, due to misinformation, theyâd missed their connecting flight. Stranded at the Cleveland airport for what seemed like days. Now this. Milo glanced down at the sheet, glanced up at the representative. âMy girlfriend and I have been traveling forââ he checked his temper and his watch ââten hours. Weâre exhausted, weâre frustrated and weâre expected. I need a car. Stick. Automatic. Compact or luxury. Whatever youâve got.â
âBut I donât have anything, sir. There are several conventions in town. Good for us, bad for you.â He passed Milo back his credit card. âSorry.â
âUnbelievable,â he said to himself as he turned to Evie. Only she wasnât there. She
