so she said, âIt is a fund-raiser.â
When supercompetitive Ann chimed in to say âItâs all about teamwork and determination,â her lecturing tone was aimed at Tyson.
âAnd speed,â Tyson scoffed. âOtherwise you wouldnât catch me doinâ it.â
Tyson probably knew he wouldnât have been included if he hadnât been so fast, Darby thought.
Pauli gave Tyson a playful punch, then said, âItâs about bragging rights, too. When Jewel whips everyone else, theyâll be standing in line for one of her foals.â
âThatâs a good idea,â Megan said, but she was looking at Cade.
âWeâll see,â Ann taunted the guys. âWeâve got a pretty fast horse, ourselves.â
âPretty pupule , you mean,â Tyson sneered.
Tension crackled between Ann and Tyson.
Of course he knew, Darby thought, but did he have to bring it up?
âNo joke,â Tyson went on, turning to Pauli. âHer crazy horse tried to kill my mom.â
âOh, come on!â Ann snapped. âMy horse didnât touch your mom. She just fell off a completely different horse because she was scared of mine.â
Megan grabbed Annâs sleeve and jerked her sideways.
âBack off, Crusher,â Megan said, but Ann wrested her arm from Meganâs grip.
âNo! He can back off!â Ann moved closer to Tyson.
âIâve seen this show beforeââMegan tried to make their anger into a jokeââand donât anybody say anything about a redheadâs temper.â
No one thought it was funny.
Darby had felt this building pressure before, too, just as fights were starting at school. But she couldnâtlet her best friend pick a fistfight with Tyson right here at âIolani Ranch.
âAnn,â Darby said under her breath, âis your dad going to let you race, ifââ
âNaw, donât call her off. Let the malihini take a swing,â he taunted.
All of a sudden the racket of sawing and pounding stopped and Darby saw the tall construction worker headed their way. For a fraction of a second she almost felt sorry for Tyson, because he didnât see his father coming after him.
âI know,â Darby blurted. âWeâll have a practice race, likeâin three days, yeah?â
âA grudge match,â Megan said, backing her up. âThen weâll see whoâs got a fast horse.â
âAnd an out-of-control rider,â Pauli said, smiling at Ann.
âTyson.â Darbyâs voice was just above a whisper, but he heard and looked in the direction she did.
Tyson turned. He pretended to storm away from the conflict, but he wanted to face his father before George Mookini confronted him in front of his friendsâand enemies.
Darby exhaled, and she must have closed her eyes for a second, because when she opened them, everyone was looking at her.
âWhat?â she asked.
âWhy did you do that?â Ann demanded.
âDo what?â Darby blinked innocently, even thoughshe knew her act was unconvincing.
âYou know what,â Pauli said. He studied her for a few seconds, then looked away.
Cade beamed at Darby, and she couldnât figure that out at all.
âNo big deal,â Megan said. âIâve seen her rescue a pig before.â
âMegan!â Darby gasped.
âThe pig was cuter,â Megan added.
âWhy? Heâs always picking on you. Why would you saveââ Ann broke off when Pauli refocused on the girls.
âYouâre just way too nice for your own good, girlfriend,â Megan said, slinging her arm over Darbyâs shoulder.
âUh- huh !â Ann hung her arm over Darbyâs other shoulder.
Bonded together that way, with Darby in the middle, they faced Pauli and Cade and made a date for a ride-and-tie showdown.
