had been able to establish that Todd had been in the town on Wednesday, October 3rd. They had three definite sightings. He was recognised getting off the Simrishamn-bound train by one of the station staff. He had been in the Hotel Continental, where he’d asked the receptionist to take a photograph of him with his camera in the foyer. And then he’d visited Fridolfs café. According to one of the staff, he left around half past one. ‘After that, nothing,’ Wallen finished. ‘Fridolfs and the Hotel Continental both feature in the Mankell books, so it fits in with his love of Wallander.’
There was a muted snort from Moberg, whose reading was confined to police reports and divorce papers. ‘So he could have gone anywhere after he left the café.’
‘We don’t think that he came back to Malmö,’ ventured Hakim. ‘Well, not by train. We haven’t found anything on the Triangeln CCTV.’
‘That doesn’t mean he didn’t,’ Moberg added unnecessarily.
‘What we do know,’ said Anita quickly before Moberg took any more digs at Hakim, ‘is that Todd must have had a camera, a mobile phone and a computer with him, which are all missing. All might contain incriminating evidence.’
‘Presumably, they’re at the bottom of the fucking Sound by now, or destroyed,’ mused Moberg.
An hour later they had got no further forward. The only thing they had was the means of killing and a hint of a motive. Whoever Graeme Todd had met up with wanted something from him badly enough to torture him. Whatever information he had had was dangerous knowledge. They had to agree with Eva Thulin – there must have been more than one perpetrator. Of course, as Anita had pointed out, the killers might well have been trying to shut him up. If the break-in at the Todd home in Cumbria really had been to remove Doris Little’s file, they were obviously covering their tracks. Obliterating their identity. More worrying was the fact that they had enough clout to influence events in Britain from here in Sweden. Were they straying into the realms of organized crime?
‘Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,’ weighed in Moberg. He pushed away an empty pizza box. He had finished Wallen’s leftovers.
‘Do you hope to get anything of any use from the English police?’ he asked Anita with a stifled yawn. She reflected ruefully that he couldn’t possibly be as tired as her – she’d been up since half past one that morning.
‘We can only hope so. I certainly think that the key to the mystery lies in England, even if the murderers are over here.’
Moberg thoughtfully drummed his thick fingers on the table top. ‘Well, I suggest you bugger off over there and see what you can dig up.’

CHAPTER 18
It would be a couple of days before Anita could get clearance to go to England and start prying into Graeme Todd’s life. It had to be sanctioned officially through Commissioner Dahlbeck in Malmö and the Chief Constable in Cumbria. No one wanted to be seen stepping on anybody’s toes. Dahlbeck was already worried that they had a dead British citizen on their hands. The Mayor wanted a quick resolution. That wasn’t going to happen. There was also Jennifer Todd to deal with, as she was flying over to officially identify the body. She was glad that Nordlund would be able to help soon even if it meant the loathsome Westermark would be involved as well. With no leads, they needed the full team on this case.
She had decided to go to Ystad herself. That was where Todd had last been seen. Hakim was going through hours of CCTV footage from various vantage points in Malmö. They had gone for the obvious locations like Triangeln, all the major squares, the Central Station and the busiest shopping streets, plus the two places they knew he had visited before – the main library and Malmöhus. A couple of the polishus IT staff had been commandeered to help, despite the protests of the head of the IT department. After having marched into Moberg’s
