Jack, and Entratter will tell him itâs OK. Then he has to check with the players.â
âWell, they wonât say no to Edward G. Robinson, right?â Jerry asked. âRico?â
âI hope not,â I said.
âSo what do we got to do until then?â Jerry asked. âGet somethinâ to eat?â
It had been a few hours since breakfast, so I said, âYeah, sure, letâs go downstairs and get something to eat.â
He went to the Garden Café. I didnât want to leave the building until I talked to Billy again. Or maybe I should have called Jack and suggested that he call Billy. No, that might make Billy think I was going over his head.
He sat in a booth and Jerry started looking over the menu. It hadnât changed since the last time heâd eaten there, but I let him look.
âHey, Eddie G.,â the waitress said. Her name was Lily, sheâd been working there for about three months, which meant sheâd never seen Jerry. âWhoâs your big friend?â
âJerry, meet Lily.â
âHi,â Jerry said.
Lily was attractive, thirty-five or so, with red hair, green eyes and a very flirtatious manner. She turned up the heat on those eyes when she looked at Jerry.
âAnd what does Jerry want to drink?â she asked, smiling at him.
âCoffee,â he said. âBut Iâll have a chocolate shake with my food.â
âOK,â she said, âchocolate shake for the big guy.â She looked at me.
âIced tea.â
âCominâ up.â
She walked away and Jerry watched her hips sway.
âYou like redheads?â I asked.
âA lot.â
âSheâs single and, supposedly, kind of wild.â
âNaw,â Jerry said, turning his attention back to the menu. âI like red-headed whores.â
âJerry ⦠have you ever had a girl? I mean, a regular girlfriend?â
âOf course,â he said. âA few. But it never ended well. So I stopped. Started using only whores. It works out better that way.â
âOK,â I said. Far be it for me to try to change his mind from something that was working for him.
âHowâs the meat loaf?â he asked.
TWENTY-NINE
W e finished eating â Jerry went for the meat loaf and liked it, I had a burger and fries. I wasnât really hungry, and a burger was always my fall back meal. But we finished eating and I grew impatient, so I asked Lily to bring a phone to the table.
âIâm gonna call Billy now,â I said to Jerry, dialing.
âYou got your way,â Billy said when he heard my voice. He wasnât happy. âEntratter said to give you whatever you want.â
âNot me,â I said, âEdward G. Robinson.â
âWhoever,â he said. He gave me the room number and the time that the game would start, and slammed the phone down.
âHe sounded mad from here,â Jerry said.
âHeâll get over it,â I said. âHe hasnât been working here that long.â
âDoesnât know that youâre the man, huh?â
âYou want dessert?â I asked.
âPie,â he said.
I waved Lily over and we both had cherry pie.
âAfter this,â I said to him, âweâll go up and see Mr Robinson.â
âThatâll be great,â he said.
Edward G. Robinson answered the door to his suite himself.
âOh, good, Eddie G.,â he said. âI was afraid it was that annoying girl the studio stuck me with.â
âEddie, this is my friend, Jerry. Jerry, meet Edward G. Robinson.â
âWow,â Jerry said, âthis is a real honor, Mr Robinson.â
âWell,â Eddie Robinson said, shaking Jerryâs big paw, âyouâre a big one, arenât you? I couldâve used you in some of my earlier pictures.â
âMe? Really?â
âCome on in, both of you,â Robinson said. âWhatâs on the agenda
