doing here? We donât get many humans coming this way.â
âWe just wanted directions,â said Annie. âWeâre going to see the fairy Moonbeam, in the Moonflower Glade.â
âAh!â said the ogre. âI can give you directions, but you do know that the way is long and fraught with danger?â
Annie sighed. âEveryone keeps telling us that.â
âAll right then. Pay attention. Take the road out of town, go right at the pasture where Midas keeps hiscattle, then go over the rainbow bridge, under the waterfall, turn left, and youâre there.â
âAre there any special dangers we should expect to find?â asked Annie.
âI donât know,â said the ogre. âIâve never been there.â
âAnnie, is everything all right?â Liam asked, hurrying across the street.
Annie nodded. âThis nice gentleman was just giving us directions to the Moonflower Glade.â
âGood, because no one in that tavern would talk to me. Iâve been waiting this whole time for someone to notice that I was there.â
âIâm sure they noticed you,â said the ogre. âThey just didnât want to talk to you.â
âThank you for the directions,â Annie told him.
âGood luck getting there,â the ogre said, and walked away.
âWhy does everyone keep warning us about the way to the Moonflower Glade?â Liam asked as they started down the road. âWe have yet to see anything dangerous.â
âI thought that ogre with the terrible tongue looked dangerous,â said Gwendolyn.
Liam scowled at her. âI thought I told you not to talk to anyone.â
âThey talked to us first,â Gwendolyn said, shrugging.
Chapter 10
Beldegard didnât rejoin them until they were out of sight of the ogreâs village. Although he gave Gwendolyn an affectionate lick on her cheek, Annie thought he looked worried. Liam must have thought so too, because the first thing he said to the bear prince was, âWhatâs wrong?â
Beldegard glanced back into the forest behind him. âI think someone is following us. I noticed it in the woods after you left.â
âMaybe itâs the boy with the cat Annie and Liam told me about,â said Gwendolyn. âMaybe he discovered who I was and wants to start courting me.â
âI doubt it was him,â said Annie. âI donât think he ever saw you.â
âWhat boy?â growled Beldegard.
âIt might be one of the men from the ferry,â said Liam. âSome of them seemed awfully interested inGwendolyn. But donât worry,â he told the girls. âNow that we know someone is there, weâll watch for him. It would be hard to hide from all of us.â
âWhere do we go now?â asked the bear prince.
âWe stay on this road until we reach a field where some man keeps his cattle,â said Annie. âThen we turn right and cross over a rainbow bridge and go under a waterfall. It didnât sound as if it was too far from here.â
âSo when do we encounter all these dangers everyone keeps telling us about?â Gwendolyn asked.
âNo one seems to know,â Annie told her.
The day grew hotter as they walked, so when the road eventually drew close to a stream, Gwendolyn cried out with delight and started for its banks.
âWait!â shouted Beldegard as he lumbered after her. âYou never know what might lie in wait in places like this. Remember, weâve had all those warnings about danger.â He padded around the clump of birch trees shading the water to snuffle the inviting moss edging the stream. When he bent down to taste the clear, sparkling water, he drew back suddenly and shook his head. âDonât drink this!â
âWhy? Is it poisoned?â asked Liam.
âNo,â the bear prince said. âBut cattle have fouled the water near here. This stream
