wondered about his behavior, but for just a minute. It was the worst possible time for a phone call. Sheâd miss Mike. Besides, sheâd never be able to hearâthe bar was three deep in people.
Just as she reached the bar, a sudden realization hit Nancy. Zach was purposely trying to keep her from following Mike. Could he be in on it, too? He has to be, Nancy thought. And he did practically shove me over here.
Nancy turned and faced Zach. He was still smiling, but his eyes werenât twinkling as they usually did. She forced herself to smile back. She didnât want to let him know that she suspected him. It was much too soon.
Calmly, Nancy moved past the crowd and walked behind the bar to pick up the phone.
âHello, Nancy,â a female voice said. âI see you decided not to take our advice and get off the case.â
Although she tried to disguise it, the voice belonged to Rita!

N ANCY TOOK A slow, deep breath, hoping her voice wouldnât shake when she accused the person on the other end. âHello, Rita,â she said, surprisingly steadily.
âYou couldnât stay away, could you?â Rita asked, dropping her disguise. âYou just had to keep on trying to help your little friend, Joanna.â
âRight,â Nancy said. âWell, Rita, itâs been nice talking to you, but Iâve really got to hang up now.â
âNice try,â Rita said with a laugh. âBut, Nancy dear, hereâs whatâs really going to happen.First, say goodbye to anyone you know at the bar in a real friendly way. We donât want anyone suspecting anything.â
Nancy glanced over at the door leading to the pool, hoping to see Ned or George out there. No luck. She had told them to stay with Cindy, and thatâs exactly what they were doing.
âAnd then,â Rita continued, âyouâll do exactly what Zach tells you to do.â
âWhat if I donât?â Nancy asked.
Rita laughed her usual friendly laugh. âWhy donât you take a look at everybodyâs favorite bartender?â she suggested.
Nancy looked. Zach was standing right beside her. In one hand, he held a glass of soda. But in the other hand, hidden from everyoneâs view but Nancyâs, was a gun, pointed straight at her. When he saw her notice the gun, Zach winked.
âOkay, Iâve seen it,â Nancy told Rita. âWhat are you telling me? That if I donât do what he says, heâll shoot me? Right here in front of all these witnesses? Thatâs pretty hard to believe.â
âWell, youâre welcome to put him to the test,â Rita said. And she didnât laugh this time. âBut I guarantee youâll be very disappointed.â
For a second, Nancy was tempted to calltheir bluff, if it was a bluff. But then she looked at the gun again and saw that its barrel was longer than usual. Looking more closely, she realized that it wasnât an extralong barrel; it was a normal barrel with a silencer on the end of it. The lounge was so crowded and noisy that a gunshot would sound about as loud as a pin dropping on the carpet.
âAll right,â Nancy said to Rita. âYou win. For now, anyway. What do you want me to do?â
Rita chuckled. âAs I said, do whatever Zach tells you. And no tricks, Nancy, or youâll be very sorry.â
Iâm sorry already, Nancy thought, hanging up the phone. Turning to Zach, she said, âWell? Whatâs the plan?â
For an answer, Zach draped a dishtowel over his wrist, concealing the gun. Then he nodded toward the direction of the locker room stairs. âIâll be right behind you,â he said, smiling so that everyone would think he was enjoying the company of a pretty girl. âLetâs move, Nancy, okay?â
As slowly as she could, Nancy walked toward the stairs. But it wasnât slow enough. Ned and George didnât suddenly appear in the lounge to
