come over this afternoon arenât friends, then what are they?â
âThey didnât exactly
jump
,â Skye argued feebly. âNot all of them, anyway. I had to promise Maddy that she wouldnât miss some TV show about meerkats. Butââ
âBut nothing,â Gran said briskly, expertly chopping the carrot into neat sticks. âAs I recall, you didnât have to argue with any one of them. And even though this sketchbook situation isnât going to get any worse, I think you still owe those kids an explanation about the drawings you did of them that got put up at the dance.â
âI guess,â Skye mumbled.
âMaybe you even owe your friends an apology,â Gran suggested.
âThey arenât officially my friends,â Skye objected, hearing how lame her objection sounded even as she stated it. âAnd I never meant for anyone to see
any
of the drawings,â she added, defending herself â and practicing a little for the speech sheâd apparently still have to give that afternoon. âNot to mention that Maddy and Jamila werenât even
at
the dance,â she pointed out. âSo wonât Ijust be stirring up trouble if I tell themââ
âYou know Maddy and Jamila will hear about it eventually,â Gran interrupted. âAnd those kids are your new friends, Skye, whether you want to admit it or not. I thought you were getting used to living with me here in Sierra Madre, sweetheart,â she added, her voice softening. âI hoped you were, anyway. I certainly love having you here.â
âI
am
getting used to it,â Skye mumbled. â
Too
used to it, maybe! Because this is only temporary, and sooner or later, I have to go back.â
It wasnât â
back home
â anymore, Skye noted, surprisedâjust â
back
.â
âNot necessarily,â Gran said carefully, turning to wash a green pepper under cool running water. âThis whole situation isnât only about Scotty, Skye. Everyone â including your mom and your dad â wants whatâs best for you. We want you never to feel trapped. And you do have a say in the matter.â
âReally?â Skye asked.
âReally.â
âWell, one thing I have to say,â Skye said suddenly, âis that I wouldnât put that green pepper on the platter if I were you, Gran â or Maddy will
freak
, and thatâs all we need to make it a perfect afternoon.â
âOh, my gosh, youâre right!â Gran said, smacking her head with the plump palm of her hand. âNow, that
would
have been a disaster.â
âA little one, anyway,â Skye said, laughing.
âAnd weâve had enough of the other kind, havenât we?â Gran said, reeling Skye in for a hug.
âAnd so I just wanted to say that Iâm sorry if anyone was embarrassed Friday night by those drawings, or if your feelings got hurt,â Skye told Amanda, Matteo, Jamila, Pip, and a confused-looking Maddy an hour later. âI didnât mean anything bad when I did them, and anyway, they were supposed to be private.â
Amanda scowled. âBut I donât get it,â she said. âWhy did you even draw us that way? I thought you liked us! And you made me look like a â â
âI do like you,â Skye interrupted hastily. âI mostly drew those pictures when I first got here, and I didnât even know you guys. Not really. And I was feeling really bad about â about
everything
, so I kind of took it out on you. Youâre not the only one with a dark inner life, you know,â she told Amanda, hoping she would remember the time sheâd proudly claimed that for herself.
âSorry about your brother,â Pip mumbled, looking embarrassed.
âYeah,â Matteo said, eyeing the bowl of chips. âThatâs gotta suck.â
âScottâs better than he was last summer,â Skye assured
