song ended,
she moved into him and gave him a quick hug. Surprised, he straightened, but
didn't move away.
    "What's your
name?" Ashley asked.
    "Jake. Jake
Daniels."
    "Jake. I like
it."
    The next song was
starting and they were still standing on the dance floor, so they began to
dance to it. At first, neither recognized it, but after a confusing
introduction, it settled into a slower number. Ashley moved closer, and Jake
took her into his arms for an easy two-step. They were dancing like lovers,
Ashley's head resting against Jake's chest, when an angry voice startled her.
    "What the hell is
this?" Dirk had arrived.
    Ashley jerked away from
Jake, but Dirk had seen enough. "Keep your hands off my girl!"
Jake gave Dirk a cool glance.
"Your girl asked me to dance. It was the polite thing to do."
    Ashley turned to Dirk,
but before she said anything, he seized her arm and propelled her toward the
table where Rebecca Sue and his friend Jason waited. She shook her arm free,
and sat down, pouting. Embarrassed, Ashley would not look toward Jake, who
shrugged and returned to his table, irritated.
    Dirk was still angry.
"Why do you have to be such a little tease, Ash? One of these days you're
going to get me in a real fight."
    "I was just
dancing with him, asshole. You didn’t have to go all caveman on him."
    "Come with me, we
need to talk."
    Yanking her up by the
arm again, Dirk force-marched Ashley outside to the patio, where a few people
were smoking. He looked around for a quiet spot and shoved her into a chair.
Leaning over her, his face only an inch from hers, he spoke with a vicious
snarl.
    "You don't dance
with other guys when you're with me. You're with me until I say you're not. You
don't call me asshole, especially when other people are around. Do you get
that?"
    Ashley got it, but she
didn't have to like it. Her defiant glare set Dirk off again.
    "You're going to
pay for this little stunt. It's about time you wrapped those lips around my
cock again. Just wait 'til I get you in bed."
    Ashley retorted, but
only in her mind, that it might be a cold day in hell when she went to bed with
him again. It wouldn't do any good to antagonize him though, so to salvage the
evening she pretended to reconsider  her attitude. Later, she would decide what
to do about Dirk, who was getting too cocky for his own good.
    "Okay, Dirk. Let's
have a nice evening."
    Mollified, he put his
arm around her as he led Ashley back into the club to dance.

Chapter Two

    Walter Steele put down
the phone and took a handkerchief out of his pocket to wipe his brow. He felt
every day of his forty-four years at the moment, having been informed by his
CFO that irregularities in the books might invite a government audit. He had no
illusions that it didn’t have to do with that little side project of
Johansson's for which he had loaned a little money. Damn it, the money was his,
he should be able to do with it as he pleased, but the blasted government
didn't see it that way. Johansson should have made him whole again before the
quarterly internal audit. But, the project wasn't going as planned. Now he would
get to explain to some twenty-dollar an hour government flunky why he had taken his money out of the corporate account without approval from the board that
he appointed himself, to help a friend. His CFO told him it might mean jail
time. Unbelievable.
    When he regained
control of his temper, Wally's next call was to Dane Johansson. The men had
been neighbors for over a decade, and their kids dated. The families even hoped
that Johansson's son Dirk might marry Walter's daughter Ashley, although he saw
no sign of an engagement ring yet. Give them time to grow up a bit, Jessica
always told him. Thinking of his beautiful young wife and what she did for him
in bed always cheered him. His frame of mind much improved, he softened his
first words when Dane Johansson picked up the phone.
    "Dane, we've got a
problem," he said.
    "Oh?"
    "Yeah, my CFO just
reamed me out
