everywhere.â
âI hope thatâs true.â She hoped people left signs tooâdidnât just disappear, didnât evaporate. She prayed God would give her the vision to see the signs, follow the trail, to find Abby and to bring her home.
âPiper told me about your friend.â He looked at her with such compassion in his eyesâcompassion only a fellow sufferer could understand. âIâm sorry.â
She nodded her thanks. âI was hoping to pick your brain a little, if thatâs okay?â
He shifted. âWhy me?â
âYou were so helpful on the last investigation. . . .â
âBeginnerâs luck.â He took another sip of cider.
âRight, but I was still hoping I could run some things by youâsee if you have any more luck in you.â She needed his expertise.
He stiffened slightly beside her, clearly trying to figure out if she knew more than she was letting on.
âPlease. Iâm so worried about my friend.â
âAll right, but I canât promise Iâll be much help.â
âThanks.â
âWhy do you want his help?â
Kayden. Darcy exhaled. Not now. Not when Jake was willing to listen.
âHe was so helpful with Reefâs case, andââ
âHe was, wasnât he?â Kayden cocked her head. âMakes you wonder where he got such knowledge.â She was the steadfast doubter when it came to Jake. She didnât trust himâcouldnât accept a man who wouldnât admit his past.
âHey, Darcy,â Clint said, striding up. âThe sunset is going to be amazing. I know a great vantage point. Care to join me?â
âUh . . .â She glanced over at Jake.
âWe can catch up later,â he said.
She looked back at Clint and smiled. âSure.â Sheâd hoped for help from Jake, but maybe sheâd find some from Clint instead. He knew Abbyâbrief as their time working together might have been. Clint was open and easygoing, and clearly feeling more and more comfortable around her. Maybe he was ready to share a bit more.
Near the top of a rocky rise, Clint extended his hand.
Darcy took hold, and he guided her up the final steps. She gazed across the northern expanse of the island to the strait and beyond, and her breath caught. The sun was setting to her left, and straight ahead, two snow-covered peaks glistened in the evening light. âItâs stunning.â
âYes,â he said, stepping closer. âYou are.â
She glanced over to find his gaze fixed on her. âThanks.â
âItâs the truth.â He reached out, caressing her jaw with the back of his hand.
âThanks for bringing me up here.â She shifted her attention back to the view, hoping heâd do the same. âSo, what am I looking at?â
âThose are the Pavlov volcanoes. That spit of land that they sit on divides the Pacific Ocean from the Bering Sea.â
âWow. You sure know this area well.â
âItâs not my first excursion here. After a while, you learn where the best vantage points are.â
âDid Abby come on excursion here too?â
âSure. On the last cruise.â
âDid you show her this view?â
âNah.â
âHow come?â
âWe never really connected.â
âConnected?â
He smiled. âI like you, like your style. Thought youâd enjoy a good view.â
âAnd Abby?â
âNever really thought about Abby. Then again, I only worked a few excursions with her.â
âThis is the first excursion weâve worked together.â
âYeah, but we connected. Clicked. Ya know?â
She smiled but didnât feel any true connection, though it would hardly help her cause to let Clint know that. He was a nice enough guyâshe just had pressing matters at hand.
Gageâs words of condemnation raced through her mind, and she tried to
