showing me her canine teeth. I take a step backward.
âYou okay?â My dad looks down at me. âYouâre shaking like a leaf.â
âMaybe Iâm coming down with something,â I tell him. âI donât feel so good.â
My dad puts his arm around my shoulders.
âWell, something must be going around. The way your sisterâs been acting tonight, Iâm pretty sure sheâs caught something, too.â
You donât know the half of it, I think as we walk back toward the house.

That night, after dinner, I take the phone to my room.
She answers on the first ring.
âFranki?â
âYeah?â
Relief washes over me. âYour phone. Itâs working.â
âYeah,â she says. âAunt Carol saved the day again.â Frankiâs aunt lives in Boston with her girlfriend and a bunch of foster dogs. Sheâs always helping Lila out of jams.
âYou donât sound too good, Chuck,â Franki says. âWhatâs up?â
It feels good to be talking to Franki again. I decide to tell her about Coach.
For a long time, she doesnât say anything. When she finally does, her voice is softer than normal.
âYou know what I sometimes wish?â she says.
âWhat?â I press the phone closer to my ear.
âI wish that someone would invent a machine that could suck up all the jerks in this world and shoot them into outer space, far away from the rest of us.â She pauses. âCharlie?â
The sound of her voice is making my eyelids heavy. âYeah?â
âWill you do me a favor?â
I lean back on my pillow. âOkay.â
âMake us a machine like that, will you? When you become a scientist?â
I close my eyes. âSure. First thing Iâll do when I get my own lab.â
She giggles. âItâll probably make you famous.â
âIâll get the Nobel Prize.â I giggle, too. âWhen they give it to me, theyâll say, âTo Charles Michael Burger ⦠for ridding the world of worthless and unnecessarily mean, air-sucking scumbags.ââ
She really cracks up at that, but then her voice gets all muffled, like sheâs holding her hand over the receiver. A second later, sheâs back, sounding like her regular Franki self.
âIâve got to go.â
âNow?â
âYeah, now.â
âOkay. Want to go to the beach on Saturday?â
âCanât.â She sighs. âIâve got to babysit Rose. Lilaâs doing hair and makeup for a whole wedding party. Sheâs going to be at the shop most of the day, and I have to make sure Rose stays out of Carlâs way.â
âOh,â I say. âHey, Frank?â
âYeah?â
I pause. âDo you believe in magic?â
âWhy?â
âJust curious.â
She takes a deep breath. âI guess I used to. When I was a kid.â I hear someone call her name. âIâll see you in the morning, okay?â
âYeah, in the morning,â I repeat, but sheâs already gone.
I reach over and pick my science journal off my desk.
I think about Coach and the things he said to me on the field today.
I think about Franki and her machine.
I think about magic.
I start to write.

Episode 4: The Cockroach Gets Creamed
The rumor was spreading quickly. Planet Splodii was about to be invaded by the grossest of creatures. Its ability to survive under the most impossible conditions gave it an advantage over most of the universeâs inhabitants.
His name was Croach the Cockroach. But he wasnât just a cockroach. He was head of all insects throughout the galaxy, and his mission was to travel the universe looking for humans whose organs were considered a delicacy among oversize invertebrates. Once he found them, heâd stun them with his poisonous spit, then transport them back to his home, where their stomachs, livers,
