eyes. Or was that just a cover for what he wasreally afraid ofâthat Nancy had caught the person who was trying to scare Andrew off the renovation.
âActually,â Nancy said evenly, âIâm not interested in your dance mixes. Iâm more curious about your sound effects.â
âSame difference,â Blaster said. âI spent a lot of time putting those together. I donât want anybody else to get their hands on them.â
Nancy took the âHaunted Houseâ tape out of the player and showed it to Blaster. âWe know that someone is trying to scare us away from the place, and twice now weâve heard ghostly noises inside the inn,â she said. âIf these tapes match the sounds weâve heard, youâre going to look guilty. If they donât, it will help clear you.â
âI donât need to be cleared!â Blaster shouted. âI didnât do anything wrong!â
âThen prove it,â Ned challenged him. âLet us listen to the tape.â
Master Blaster stuffed his hands into the pockets of his jacket. âFine,â he said hotly. âIâve got nothing to hide. Go ahead and play it.â
Nancy once more loaded the âHaunted Houseâ tape into her player. Her heart started to beat faster as she pressed the Play button.
âAaaaaaaaaaagh!â The tormented cry filled Nancyâs car, giving Nancy a creepy feeling. The wails sounded just like the ones theyâd all heard the first day at the inn.
âSound familiar, Ned?â Nancy asked.
âVery,â he replied, nodding.
Master Blasterâs face turned bright red. âYou donât know what youâre talking about,â he said.
Nancy pressed the Stop button and faced the deejay squarely. âWhere were you last night, around ten oâclock?â she asked.
âWhat difference does it make?â Blaster demanded.
âBecause thatâs when we heard some of these sound effects,â she answered. âRight before a white sheet came flying off the balcony in the ballroom, rigged to look like a ghost.â
Blaster looked from Nancy to Ned, then started to laugh. âGive me a break,â he scoffed. âWhoâd pull a stupid trick like that?â
âDonât pretend you donât remember,â Ned said. âYou must have set it up yourself, right after you turned on the stereo.â
The deejay held up his hands defensively. âLook, man, I wasnât anywhere near the inn last night!â
âThatâs funny, because your tapes were,â Nancy shot back.
âWell, someone must have borrowed them, like you just tried to,â Blaster contended. âThey could have made copies and put the originals back when I wasnât looking.â
He was putting on a good show of innocence, Nancy had to admit. But that didnât change thefact that heâd acted suspiciously after some of the accidents. Pressing the Eject button, she put the tape in its box and gave it to Blaster.
âWhy are you so determined to blame me for something I didnât do?â Blaster demanded, taking the cassette. âI know youâve been talking to my grandmother. Well, Iâm warning you now. Stay away from her!â
Ned leaned across Nancy to say, âWhat are you so afraid of, Blaster? That weâll find out the truth about you? Like the fact that you used to go out with Julie Ross?â
Blaster hesitated, then said angrily, âMy personal life is none of your business.â
âIt is when it could explain all the trouble going on here,â Nancy said. âMaybe youâre jealous of Andrew because he took Julie away from you. Sabotaging his renovation project would be a good way of getting back at him.â
Blaster gaped at her. âWhy would I want to do that?â he demanded. âAndrew promised me I can be the deejay at the dance club here when the inn opens. Itâs not
